About the NSWO

Society

The Dutch Society for Sleep – Wake Research (NSWO) is an independent association with the primary goal of stimulating and supporting Dutch activities in the field of science and knowledge related to sleep and sleep-wake disorders. It brings together sleep researchers, physicians, and support staff working in the area of sleep and sleep disorders, and promotes the exchange of knowledge.

Goals

  • Facilitating and promoting scientific research in the field of sleep.
  • Encouraging interaction and knowledge transfer between researchers and practitioners involved in sleep and sleep disorders.
  • Serving as a professional advisory body for the government, healthcare institutions, or institutes.
  • Providing information about sleep and sleep disorders to the general public in the Netherlands.
  • Maintaining contact with patient organizations and (international) scientific societies.

Events

The NSWO organizes multiple symposia, a multi-day conference, and awards prizes for scientific presentations and dissertations. Examples include the Piet Visser Poster Prize and the Hilbert-Kamphuisen Prize for the best dissertation. The NSWO also plays an important role in informing professionals. Members can attend these events free of charge or at a discounted rate.

Annual NSWO Spring Symposium

Biennial NSWO Autumn Symposium

Biennial SLAAP Congress, in collaboration with the Dutch Society for Sleep Medicine (SVNL).

Research

The NSWO promotes both fundamental and applied scientific research on sleep and wakefulness. This research focuses on the mechanisms, functions, conditions, and consequences of sleep and sleep disorders. We aim to be a knowledge platform that connects researchers, the public, practitioners, patient organizations, and the media.

Information for NSWO members

Become member by filling out the application form (‘inschrijfformulier’) at the bottom of our ‘word lid!’ page.

For its members, the NSWO organizes activities including symposia, acts as a representative of Dutch sleep-wake research, supports early-career researchers, and serves as a knowledge source in the field of sleep.

NSWO members enjoy the following benefits:

  • Free access to the annual NSWO Spring Symposium
  • Free access to the biennial NSWO Autumn Symposium
  • Discounted admission to the biennial SLAAP Congress
  • Reduced NSWO membership fee for early-career researchers
  • Social gatherings and other activities for early-career sleep-wake researchers
  • Financial support for publishing dissertations (€350)
  • Opportunity to apply for an Early Career Grant (up to €750)

In addition, the NSWO annually awards the Piet Visser Poster Prize, and biennially the Hilbert Kamphuisen Prize for the best dissertation.

Early Career Grant

To encourage and support scientists at the start of their careers, the NSWO has established the Early Career Grant. This grant can be applied for to, among other things, present scientific work at a conference, visit a foreign lab, or attend a course related to sleep research. The grant provides a maximum of €750. For procedures and conditions, see the NSWO Early Career Grant PDF.

Dissertation Support

The NSWO aims to stimulate scientific interaction and the exchange of knowledge. A PhD candidate who is a member of the NSWO can apply for financial support for the publication costs of their dissertation. The board may grant a contribution of up to €350. For procedures and conditions, see the Thesis Contribution Requirements PDF.

PhD candidates who receive this contribution are automatically entered into the competition for the biennial Hilbert Kamphuisen Prize for the best dissertation.

Committees

Early career scientists (ECS) committee

The aim of the ECS is to connect early career researchers within the NSWO. To this end, they organise various activities, including workshops and network events. They also host a LinkedIn group, where they share interesting papers and upcoming events

Education committee (EDUCIE)

The main aim of the EDUCIE is to organize symposia and courses. They traditionally organize the yearly Spring Symposium together with the ECS where they invite a sleep research group to showcase their work at their institute. They also award the Young Talent Fund to support early career researchers to visit a foreign lab, a course in sleep research or to present at a conference.

Science committee (WETCIE)

The WETCIE aims to promote the general scientific objectives of the NSWO, such as stimulating knowledge exchange among sleep researchers, providing sleep-related education, and advancing scientific sleep research in the Netherlands. The committee meets every six weeks.

Public relations (PR) committee

The main goals of the PR committee are to put our organisation out there, to have a consistent flow of relevant output and to be very open as a point of contact for all PR related questions from outside but also inside the NSWO. Based on these goals they create content, maintain the website, maintain the NSWO LinkedIn page and realise the NSWO Year in review glossy together with the Early career scientists committee.
